One Patient at a Time

If you are a supporter of Culmore Clinic, you may ask yourself - how is my support directly helping people in the Bailey’s Crossroads community? We’d like to share this story of Juan to give you an idea of how our services are making an impact one patient at a time.

Juan* is a 56-year-old patient with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. He is a laborer and a naturalized citizen, having come to the US as a young boy. When Culmore Clinic moved to telemedicine, Juan was not able to have his regular appointments to check heart rate, blood sugar, and other health indicators.

In order for our provider to be able to check on these important indicators and monitor his well-being, the Clinic provided Juan with a home blood pressure monitor, a glucometer, and test strips. Juan picked these up at The Clinic’s weekly medication pick-up service, outside the front door of First Christian Church. Patients can obtain medications, important medical supplies, gloves and masks for all household members, as well as a bag of fresh vegetables and a meal provided by our partners, Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center.

Because of his medical conditions, Juan returns to the weekly pick-up service regularly for various reasons:

  • To obtain medications provided to him via Culmore Clinic’s Breaking Barriers Fund that he could not afford otherwise.

  • To retrieve laboratory orders so he can monitor important systemic factors.

  • To enroll in NOVA ScriptsCentral, which provides vital medications to patients for a fee of $5 for a 90-day supply.

On each of his visits, the gregarious Juan would thank staff, always letting them know he thanks God for them and Culmore Clinic. On a recent visit, Juan asked the regular staffer to write her name down on a piece of paper so he could pray for her by name.

*We have changed the patients name to protect his privacy.
