Our Co-Founder on Panel with Senator Tim Kaine: Maternal Health Mortality and Women of Color
The rate of maternal mortality among women of color is shocking. A woman of color is 3 times as likely to die in the period leading up to, during, and after childbirth than a white women. Our co-founder, Terry O’Hara Lavoie, participated in a panel discussion with Senator Tim Kaine and more than a dozen health advocates at the offices if Northern Virginia Family Service in Oakton last week. It was informative and moving.
Women of color need a health system that listens to them and works as their ally in addressing their healthcare needs so that they approach and emerge from childbirth in good health and stay that way. With compassionate and culturally appropriate medical care, chronic disease management, counseling, and referrals to specialists when needed, Culmore Clinic will continue to serve women (and men) and deliver excellent health outcomes as their partners in health. We also stand ready to work with all advocates, including the truly impressive and engaged Senator Tim Kaine in addressing this crisis in healthcare. We are grateful to have been invited to share our voice and perspective on this crucial issue.
