Volunteer Spotlight: Sophia Miller, LSW
While Sophia Miller works a full-time job as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for Aetna, for more than four years, she has also served as the social worker at Culmore Clinic. Her dedication to our organization is unmatched and we are so lucky to have her. That’s why this month, we wanted to tell you more about this amazing Culmore Clinic volunteer!
CC: How did you find out about Culmore Clinic and what made you decide to volunteer?
Sophia: Four-and-a-half-years ago, Jennifer Lyons, RDN shared the wonderful work that she was doing at Culmore Clinic, sharing that a social worker was needed. The rest is history. I have been here ever since.
CC: What role are you playing at Culmore Clinic?
Sophia: I am the Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Culmore. I meet with patients for forty minutes at a time, providing brief therapy as needed and resources and referrals to other community programs, as per individual needs.
CC: Tell us a bit about your background? Where did you study? Where are you from? What do you do for work, etc.?
Sophia: I was born on the island of Jamaica and migrated to the USA when I was fifteen years old. I have been a Licensed Social Worker for the past twenty-four years. I received my Masters in Social Work from Adelphi University in New York in 2001 and am currently licensed in twelve states. I have my clinical licenses in both Virginia and Montana.
I am also a Certified Christian Life Coach and have a small private practice. I work full time for Aetna, a CVS company as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, serving its commercial members.
CC: What's your favorite part about working at Culmore Clinic?
Sophia: Culmore Clinic truly fills my social work bucket. Besides serving a population that truly appreciates and welcomes the support and guidance that I love to share, I am surrounded by dedicated medical professionals who have devoted their lives to making the world around them truly a better place. Where else would I be surrounded by doctors of all disciplines, nurses, a multi-disciplinary team of dieticians, therapists, interpreters AS WELL AS a group of prayer warriors, praying for the success of all that we do, and the lives of the patients we serve? What a blessing!!
CC: Tell us about your family and your hobbies.
Sophia: I have been happily married to the love of my life for twenty years. We live in Woodbridge, which is the longest place we have ever lived since being married. We have three children, two daughters and a son, with the two youngest, 17 and 18, still at home. Our son heads off to college in the fall.
We are a close-knit family who loves to play board games, watch movies together and anything or place that involves a beach. Gardening is my therapy and every year I look forward to Spring. Digging in the dirt is something that will never get old. I also love to take long walks, taking pictures of the beauty as I walk along.
I also absolutely love serving others and am a very active member of my church Praise Center COGIC, where love for God and others, along with community service, is our way of life.
I am so very grateful to have this opportunity to serve at Culmore Clinic.
